Martial Arts background:
Foil fencing as a kid after stealing silverware from the drawers to fight along with Errol Flynn movies!
Spent teen years riding horses - 3 Day Eventing
Discovered Tai Chi in 1986 - totally hooked from the first class.
On and off practice till moved from the UK to US in '92.
Carried on with Tai Chi, then Bagua Zhang in '95. After that it was all over!!
Started Visayan Eskrima in '98 and was accepted as a private student of Sonny Umpad in 2000. Trained privately with him for 6 years till his death at 58 years old in '06. He was, and is, a huge influence in my life.
Still train Bagua, Hsing-I and Tai Chi with Luo De Xiu of Taiwan.
Also started Toyama Ryu Battodo a couple years back.
At present I teach Bagua and Eskrima.
I am fascinated by strategy and how people tick, and enjoy randomness and chaos in training - in fact I think it's vital to understanding.
I believe traditional martial arts ARE 'reality based' - just that the context and intent have often been lost.
I am friends with The Dog Brothers and exchange ideas with Marc "Crafty Dog" Denny.
I fought at a Dog Brothers Gathering a couple years back but only with shock knives.
I paint houses for a living and love the fact that I can practice movement during my whole day :-)
Looking forward to interacting and learning more .....
